Established in 2016, Rainbow Voice Afghanistan works to preserve community memory, document changing conditions and strengthen pathways to safety.

To transform the narrative surrounding LGBTQI+ Afghans from one defined only by fear, persecution and displacement into one of dignity, resilience, visibility and hope, where every LGBTQI+ Afghan can live safely, freely and equally.

To build a strong bridge of solidarity connecting LGBTQI+ Afghans, grassroots advocates, professionals, humanitarian organizations and international partners, enabling shared resources, collective protection, community empowerment and a safer future for LGBTQI+ people in Afghanistan and in displacement.

2016

Community initiative established

Rainbow Voice Afghanistan begins as an Afghan-led effort focused on visibility, solidarity and rights.

2017–2020

Quiet network building

Community connections and informal support develop in a high-risk environment.

2021

Emergency transition

The Taliban takeover creates a new protection crisis, with members hiding, moving or leaving Afghanistan.

2022–2024

Regional displacement focus

Pakistan becomes a major transit and refuge location, but legal insecurity and deportation pressure deepen.

2025–2026

Evidence, advocacy and safer digital access

The organization expands public information while maintaining strict privacy safeguards.
